Sierra Medical Center has achieved Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) designation from the State of Nevada, the highest level of neonatal care available in the region. This designation marks a significant milestone in Northern Nevada Health System’s commitment to expanding access to high-level compassionate care for growing families in the area.
A Level III NICU is equipped to care for newborns who are less than 32 weeks of gestational age, born at an extremely low birthweight, or require advanced respiratory care or medical interventions. With this designation, Sierra Medical Center also gains transport capabilities, allowing critically ill newborns across the region to safely transfer to the hospital for specialized care delivered by a highly trained multidisciplinary team.
Sierra Medical Center opened its 12-bed Level II NICU in January 2023 and has continued expanding neonatal services, including the Family Birth Center which offers private labor and delivery suites, postpartum care and more.
The Level III NICU features specialized equipment, including advanced ventilators, heated and humidified isolettes, phototherapy technology and continued patient monitoring systems along with private rooms designed for sensitive patients, and NicView cameras that allow parents to remotely view their infant’s care. The highly experienced care team of nurses, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, case managers, and lactation consultants emphasizes a family-centered approach throughout a newborn NICU journey.
