Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center Is Officially Open, Accepting Patients

Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center officially opened Monday morning and is now accepting patients, the hospital announced.

The opening comes after years of planning and construction as well as months of training and preparation, according to CEO Alan Olive.

“We’re excited to open our doors to address the region’s need for better access to health care,” Olive said in a statement.

The opening also comes at a time when the pandemic exposed various health care issues in the community. One of those was hospital capacity, which was tested to the limit following multiple surges in COVID-19 cases.

Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center will add 170 hospital beds to the region. Each room will be private and can be converted into an ICU room if needed, according to the hospital.

Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center went on a hiring spree in preparation for its opening. New hires topped more than 250 employees, and the full-service hospital also has agreements with various providers to support the new medical center.

These include specialties such as pediatrics, anesthesia, and obstetrics and gynecology. The hospital also has a 24/7 emergency room as well as labor and delivery, oncology, cardiovascular, neurosurgical and orthopedic and surgical services.

All in all, Northern Nevada Health System and its parent company Universal Health Services have poured in $301 million into the community in constructing Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center.
