When it comes to healthcare, California is now open for enrollment.
Covered California, the state’s marketplace for health insurance is now open for residents, regardless of immigration status to shop for affordable health care.
For this session it launched the “Let’s Talk About Health” initiative, as it hopes to get more people engaged when it comes to seeking health services, from regular checkups to maintaining current regimens.
Officials have vowed that California will continue to offer its various health programs despite a Trump presidency.
“To date over 800,000 Californians have benefited from this program,” touted Covered California’s executive director Jessica Altman during a recent event at the Los Angeles Central Library.
“In 2025, we are making it so that any Covered California enrollee, regardless of their income, can enroll in these enhanced silver plans with reduced out-of-pocket costs.”
The state of California provides free and low-cost health care through MediCal and Covered California.
Eligibility for these free and low-cost health programs are based on a patient’s age, income, family size, and several other factors. California residents can check their eligibility at coveredCA.gov.
Kim Johnson, California’s health and human services secretary, said that with the help of Covered California, uninsured rates in the state have dropped from 17 percent to six percent, with Asians among the highest number of enrollees.
“Covered California [is] bringing healthcare equity to California and closing the gap in disparities including reaching the remaining uninsured across the state,” said Johnson.
“There have been new enrollment increases in every region of the state and across demographic groups.”
Covered California is expecting thousands of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients to become eligible for Covered California coverage,
“This real change will give DACA recipients more access to care and one less thing to worry about as they continue to pursue their American dream,” said Altman.
Altman added that Covered California’s marketplace is available for DACA recipients for Open Enrollment in 2025, and sign-ups for coverage as of Dec. 1 is underway.
