Richard Whitley to Direct Nevada Health and Human Services

Gov. Brian Sandoval on Monday appointed Richard Whitley director of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Whitley, former administrator of the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, has been interim director of the huge state agency since February.

“Richard has proven to be a steady and capable leader and I am pleased to make this appointment official,” Sandoval said in a statement.

The governor said Whitley “brings extensive experience and knowledge to the department and will continue to maintain the momentum behind the state’s efforts to promote a healthy citizenry.”

As director, Whitley will oversee more than 5,500 employees and a combined state and federal fund budget of more than $4.5 billion.

Whitley began state service in 1989 as senior psychologist for the Nevada Women’s Correctional Facility. He is also former administrator of the state Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services.
