Resolution Seeks Constitutional Amendment Abolishing Nevada Health Insurance Exchange

A state senator hopes to change the Nevada Constitution to abolish the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange.

Republican Sen. Don Gustavson is sponsoring SJR14, which was introduced on Monday.

The measure would prevent any Nevada agency or local government from creating or maintaining an exchange where people can buy health insurance.

Gustavson pointed to the problems that plagued the rollout of Nevada’s exchange, which was implemented as part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. He said he frequently talks to people who complain of higher insurance premiums since the law took effect.

The resolution would need approval from two consecutive Legislatures and voters before becoming part of the Constitution.

Gustavson said his change would take longer but be more permanent. A separate bill seeks to invalidate the exchange sooner.
